French

Our aim is that pupils at Willowbrook School:

  • Will be able to understand and respond to spoken and written French by the time they leave for secondary school.
  • Will be able to speak confidently and have an accuracy to their pronunciation and intonation.

We study French across the school, concentrating on four key areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. We have made the conscious decision to only introduce written French work once children are in Upper KS2, after they have developed a greater control of the spoken language. Another key principle of our approach is to do fewer things well. We teach French using a 'little and often' approach because we want children to master some key basics over time. The progression document below shows the knowledge content we work on during pupils' time at Willowbrook School.
